Barbara Britton Sedwick Obituary

Barbara Britton Sedwick, 95, of Southern Pines, passed peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 3rd, 2024.

Born in Charlottesville, VA, July 16, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Sydney and Louise Weibel Britton. Barbara earned her Bachelor’s degree from Vassar College and Master’s degree from Cornell University. She majored in Botany and went on to do research in the Philippines on a Fulbright Scholarship. When Barbara returned to the States, she worked in Biomedical Science at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA.

In 1957, Barbara married Dr. Joseph Lee Sedwick. His career as a Naval Surgeon relocated the couple to Japan where their two children were born. The couple settled in Wendell, NC in the early 1960’s where Barbara started a second career as a professional horsewoman and was one of the first American Hanoverian horse breeders. She and Dr Sedwick were members of The Triangle Hunt and later fox hunted with the Moore County Hounds.

Barbara was also an avid antique collector and enjoyed travelling the world with her husband and family. She was incredibly curious about all things natural, was a voracious reader, loved learning until the very end and was always happy to spend time with friends.

Barbara was a loving wife of 60 years to the late Dr. Joseph Lee Sedwick. She was the mother of Alicia Sedwick, and Keith Sedwick. She is also survived by her granddaughter Scarlett Henson Sedwick. Barbara was predeceased by her brothers Dr. John Bayard Britton, Richard Britton and sister Mary Britton Williams.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Hilltop Cemetery at the Walthour-Moss Foundation, 226 Equestrian Way, Southern Pines, later in the fall. The date and time will be posted on bolesfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Walthour-Moss Foundation.
