Firefighters narrowly averted a serious fire Tuesday afternoon at an apartment in Southern Pines.
Emergency responders were dispatched to The Highlands Apartments on Richards Street just before 3:00 pm Tuesday to reports of a burning smell and possible structure fire.
According to fire officials a neighbor called after smelling a burning smell from the adjoining apartment. Firefighters made entry and found an apartment filled with smoke.
Officials stated that a pot had been left on and was unattended. The contents of the pot had burned to black coals.
Fortunately the neighbor called and firefighters reached the scene before the heat could cause any further damage.
Firefighters used a high-powered fan to eject smoke from the apartment.
Responding were units with Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Pinehurst Fire Department and Whispering Pines Fire Rescue.
