Douglas Mitchell Dacko will forever be remembered by the love he had for his family, quick-wit, personality and passion for travel and literature. Douglas passed away peacefully in his home May 17, 2024, surrounded by the love of his wife and daughter.
He was born November 28, 1945 on a Naval base in Dade County Florida, and raised in Monessen, Pennsylvania. The son of an U. S. Army Veteran and steel worker, Doug was raised in the Polish/Ukrainian community and was an avid Eagle Scout, and excelled throughout all academia and graduated valedictorian of his class. After high school he made the decision to move South per his acceptance to Duke University, Class of 1967, where he eventually committed his future to medicine. Doug was also a Duke Radio DJ and member of the Duke Glee Club. After Duke Doug attended and graduated the University of Pittsburgh Medical School where he continued with his residency in Radiology until he honored his commitment to serve 2 years in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. After the Air Force Doug moved to Flint, Michigan and joined the Radiology group at McLaren General Hospital.
Douglas hit the jackpot when he met his wife Robin at McLaren, and then hit double with the addition of their only daughter in June 1986. They soon made the decision to move back South to Sanford, North Carolina in 1989 where Doug practiced Radiology at Central Carolina Hospital for almost 20 years, until he and his wife built their dream home in Pinehurst 2009 where he continued to practice part-time in Moore County. After years of being in hospitals, he fulfilled his dream of living on a golf course and playing every chance he had. Doug and Robin had a beautiful marriage of 40 years full of laughs, friends, traveling the world and an immeasurable amount of love and care for each other through the years- especially the final ones.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Robin Dacko, and daughter, Lesley Dacko Pacos, husband Paul Pacos of Pinehurst. Douglas is preceded in death by his parents John & Anne Dacko, and younger brother, Gary Dacko. The Dacko family would like to sincerely thank Mabry’s, the family and friends that stepped in, guided us and helped us during his battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
