Evelyn Black Welch, aka Evelyn Welch Caddell

Evelyn Black Welch, aka Evelyn Welch Caddell, 99, of Banner Elk and formerly West End, passed peacefully on Sunday, July 14, 2024 to be with her beloved Jesus.


Born in Pinehurst, March 19, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John Robert and Mary Williamson Black. After graduation from Pinehurst High School, she worked for the General Office of Pinehurst. Evelyn met Ralph D. Welch, a Warrant Officer stationed at Ft. Bragg in 1943. They married in 1944 and settled in the Murdocksville area. They welcomed a daughter in 1953. The family moved to Fayetteville in 1956. Evelyn volunteered at the Ramsey St. Elementary School as a grade mother and directed the children’s choir at Trinity Methodist Church from 1963 to 1965.


The family moved to Kernersville, NC in 1966. In 1973, Ralph was transferred to Tennessee, where Evelyn and Ralph lived until returning home to West End in 1981 shortly before Ralph passed away.


In 1987, she married Mr. Spencer Caddell, with whom she enjoyed traveling in their retirement years until his passing in 1996. Evelyn was a quiet and reserved lady who loved her family and all children. People will remember her as sweet and kind.


Evelyn was a longtime member of Culdee Presbyterian Church. She was active in her Circle until her 80s. Evelyn was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Welch, and her second husband, Spencer Caddell, her sister Alice Lea, her brother Robert (Bob) Black, and niece Belinda Lea Bohlander. She is survived by her daughter Marilynn and son-in-law, Kemp Baker, her god-granddaughters Amanda Beason and Carrie Foulk, her nieces and nephews (and their spouses): Bill and Linda Lea, Jimmy and Carolyn Lea, Beverly McCaskill, Wayne Lea, Steve and Javana Black, Eve and Don Williamson, Danny and Susan Caddell, Paula May Caddell, Darlene Montesanti, and Robbie and Eric McInnis, and dozens of grand and great grand-nieces and -nephews, known to most of them as “Aunt Doll”.


A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, July 20, at 4:00 PM at the Culdee Presbyterian Church, 916 NC-73, West End, NC. Pastor Connie Weaver will officiate. There will be a visitation for family and friends in the sanctuary prior to the service.


In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Culdee Presbyterian Church for their children and youth ministries, 916 NC Hwy 73, West End, NC 27376.


Services are entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines.
