Firefighters were dispatched to a fire alarm at the Microtel Inn & Suites located on Windstar Place off of US Highway in 1 in Southern Pines at 12:20 pm Thursday afternoon.
The first arriving fire unit reported a two-story commercial building with an evacuation in progress.
According to fire officials they located smoke in the laundry room of the facility, eventually determining that a dryer had caught on fire. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control within minutes limiting damage primarily to just the laundry room.
Staff at the hotel reportedly ran room to room at the 76 room hotel to ensure all of the guest not only heard the fire alarm, but evacuated from their rooms. More than one guest commented about how fast the staff worked to clear the hotel.
Staff along with the occupants from the hotel waited patiently outside while firefighters worked to clear all of the smoke from the building.
Responding today were units with Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, and Pinehurst Fire Department. Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue responded to the fire station in Southern Pines to standby for possible additional calls.
