J Michael Singleton
J Michael Singleton

J Michael Singleton, 83, of Pinehurst, NC; passed on June 30, 2024 at his home, comforted and cared for by his loving and adored wife Carol. Michael was born 1940 in Edna, TX and was raised by his parents Ernest and Drusilla Singleton Austen).

Michael requested that no funeral be held and that his friends and family continue living life and remembering him in their deeds.

Michael grew up in Edna, TX before attending the University of Texas where he majored in history and cemented his love of learning. He worked briefly as the editor for the newspaper in Mathis, TX before eventually entering financial services where he travelled extensively and raised his family as he grew in his career.

He was an avid golfer and came to Pinehurst to enjoy his retirement beside his beloved wife and play for as long as he could. While in Pinehurst, he showed his love for watching Pinecrest High School sports and made a point of attending every event he possibly could. Above all, Michael held that the greatest virtue in life was to read and to be a lifelong learner. He was a voracious reader and was captivated by what he called the great histories that explored how the world has come to be and is ever changing. He was often found in his chair with a pile of books and handwritten notes. He was diligent in saving passages, books, and magazine clippings to be shared with his family. He gave a great deal to his loved ones, but the greatest gift he ever gave was the passion to explore ideas and challenge oneself.

Michael is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carol Singleton; his brother Ernest Singleton Jr; his sisters Wanda and Diana; his children Michael Lee (Debbie), Maury Singleton, Celeste Nuñez (Santiago), Adrae Nuñez (Jose), and David Singleton (Adriana); his grandchildren Nicholas Nuñez (Kathryn), David Nuñez, Kristina Singleton, Samuel Singleton, Marissa Nuñez, Isabella Nuñez, David Lee, Tera Lee, and Victoria Wicus; and his great-grandchildren Rowan Wicus, Henry, Theodore, and Lila Dwyer-Nuñez.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Drusilla, and his brothers Milton and Oscar Singleton.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in memory of Michael to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Services entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Pinehurst.
