Joan Clark Hoover Obituary


Joan Clark Hoover, 93, passed away on June 21, 2024 at FirstHealth Hospice House.


She was born on August 1, 1930 in Peoria, Illinois to the late Mary Eudora Clark and Earl Wesley Clark of Sullivan, Illinois. Her loving husband Frank B. Hoover predeceased her in 1999 and her son, Wesley C. Hoover in 2008.


Joan studied Nursing at the University of Maryland and had a long dedicated career. After earning her Master’s Degree in Nursing from American International College in Connecticut, she taught at Stanly Community College, Fayetteville Technical College, and Sandhills Community College.


Joan was a long standing, devoted member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines. She was a member of the Alter Guild, Stephens Ministry, and a graduate of E.F.M. She participated in the Moore County Literacy Program and contributed to the Volunteer Reading Program at Aberdeen Elementary School. Joan also volunteered as a guardian ad litem for youth in the area.


Joan received a distinguished award for family service and sacrifice during her husband, Frank’s service in the Vietnam War.


An avid reader and movie buff, Joan was a Book Club member as well as lover of Turner Classic movies. She attended Metropolitan Opera series simulcast at the Sunrise Theatre every year since its inception. She and her family, long supported the local little Theater and Professional theater companies as well as the Carolina Philharmonic.


She is survived by her daughters, Janet Zielinski of Whispering Pines, and Mary Ann Gulyas of Clifton Park, NY; her son-in-law, Martin Zielinski and Dr. Joseph Gulyas; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and her cat Sammy.


A Memorial and Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 10:00AM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Private Interment will follow in the Memorial Garden. There will be a reception in the Parish Hall where the family will receive friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners.


In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Emmanuel Episcopal Discretionary Fund.


Services are entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines.
