Moore County High School Fire Academy Begins Another School Year

With the beginning of the school year on Monday for Moore County Schools brought with it the beginning of this year's Moore County High School Fire Academy. The Academy is co sponsored by Sandhills Community College Workforce Continuing Education Department and the Moore County School system.

Many students who graduate this program go on to work in paid careers in Fire service, EMS, telecommunications, and more.

Juniors and seniors from all three high schools in the county, Pinecrest, North Moore and Union Pines, are attending the program as they gain the skills necessary to become certified firefighters.

This program has a maximum of 15 students, because of the hands on nature of the training for this class. Students meet all year long, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and on Friday they have online virtual studies.

Their classes are conducted at the Larry R. Caddell Public Safety Training Center in Carthage. This allows the students to easily transition between classroom studies and hands-on training as needed.

Although the program is led by Southern Pines Fire Captain Logan DeBerry, there are a number of experienced Fire Instructors here who help teach different portions of the program.

Each student that completes this program receives four credits at the college level and are guaranteed the Sandhills Promise, which includes attending college tuition free for two years.

We will be following this year's group of students bringing you back updates along the way of their training, culminating in their graduation at the end of the year. We look forward to sharing more about their journey along the way.
