Multiple Stations Respond To Structure Fire Overnight Outside West End

Multiple fire units were dispatched to a structure fire on the 2700 block of NC Highway 73 outside of West End just before 1:00 am Friday.

According to fire officials when they arrived a workshop building was fully involved and a nearby garage with vehicles inside had smoke showing from that building, which is within feet of the home.

Due to near drought conditions a Tanker Strike Team was dispatched involving multiple stations to haul water to the scene from Eastwood where there is an above ground water storage tank at the fire department according to fire officials.

Approximately 700 feet of 5-inch diameter supply line was laid down the narrow driveway to provide water from the drop-tanks at the roadway to the trucks pumping water on the fire at the house.

Firefighters were able to bring the majority of the fire in the workshop and the garage under control within approximately 20 minutes after arriving, however they spent a considerable amount of time ensuring that the fire was completely extinguished. The workshop building was a total loss while the garage structure along with a pickup and motorcycle inside was damaged.

According to the on-scene fire commander there was also minimal heat damage to the siding on one end of the home, but there was no further damage thanks to the actions of firefighters.

Pinestraw around the buildings also caught on fire with brush units dispatched to assist, however fast working firefighters were able to stop the fire that was spreading on the ground before it got into nearby woods and before brush units reached the scene.

NC Highway 73 was closed to traffic in both directions for an extended time period due to the water-shuttle operation. There were large trucks forced to just park and wait as the roadway was to narrow in that area to attempt to turn a truck pulling a long trailer around.

Eleven fire departments responded tonight including West End Fire Rescue, Seven Lakes Fire Rescue, Eagle Springs Fire Department, Pinehurst Fire Department, Pinebluff Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Crains Creek Fire Rescue, Whispering Pines Fire Rescue, Eastwood Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff's Office, and the Moore County Fire Marshals Office.

Firefighters were able to finally clear the scene just before 3:30 am. As of this report the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
