One Airlifted Following Single Vehicle Accident In Southern Pines

Emergency responders were called around 12:30 a.m. to the intersection of US Highway 1 and Murray Hill Road in Southern Pines for a vehicle accident.

The first arriving fire unit reported a single vehicle accident with the vehicle on fire.

According to fire officials, bystanders had pulled the driver from the burning vehicle prior to their arrival.

The fire was quickly brought under control once the fire department reached the scene.

The vehicle struck a large metal pole that holds up the stoplights at the intersection in this single vehicle accident.

A helicopter from UNC Carolina Air Care was called and landed at the ball field on Morganton Road to transport the patient to a trauma center.

Both lanes of US Highway 1 in the northbound direction were closed by the accident for approximately 30 minutes.

There were no visible skid marks near the accident. The wreck remained under investigation as of this report.

Responding this evening were units with Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff's Office, Southern Pines Police Department, and UNC Air Care.

This was the second person airlifted from a vehicle accident in the last 24 hours. Last night a woman was airlifted to a trauma center following a single vehicle accident in Pinebluff.
