ONE PERSON PINNED-IN TWO AIRLIFTED AFTER OVERNIGHT ACCIDENT

Emergency units were dispatched just after 2:00 a.m. to West Massachusetts Avenue near the corner of South Stephens Street in Southern Pines reference to a vehicle accident.

The first arriving emergency unit reported a single vehicle into a tree with heavy damage, with one person possibly pinned in the vehicle.

The first occupant was able to get out of the vehicle without any problems. However, it took firefighters approximately 45 minutes to remove the driver from the heavily damaged truck.

Firefighters had to use a winch on the front of a fire truck to pull the truck back from the trees so that they could gain better access to remove the door and push the dash off of the driver using specialized rescue tools.

Both men were transported by ambulance from the wreck scene to the ballpark on Morganton Road, where two helicopters from UNC Carolina Air Care landed to transport the men to a Trauma Center.

Responding tonight were units with Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Pinehurst Fire Department, Moore County EMS, the Southern Pines Police Department and UNC Air Care.
