Phyllis Ann (Tish) Preuss Obituary


Phyllis Ann (Tish) Preuss, age 85, of Southern Pines, NC passed away at her home on July 27, 2024.


Phyllis was born in Detroit, MI February 9, 1939 to Edward Preuss and Alyce Schemanske. Before moving to North Carolina Tish was executive manager of A Short Story, Inc, in Colorado Springs. Tish began playing amateur golf competitions in the 60’s and 70’s. She finished runner-up in the 1961 U.S. Women’s Amateur and on two other occasions reached the semifinals in that event. She was low amateur at the U.S. Women’s Open in 1963, ‘68 (finishing ninth overall this year) and ’69. She also claimed titles at the North and South Amateur (1964 and ’67), the Eastern Amateur (1963) and the Southern Amateur (1965 and ’68). She was inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in 1986 and was named the organization’s Golf Person of the Year two years earlier after her successful stint as U.S. Curtis Cup captain. She won the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur in 1991 at one of her favorite clubs, Pine Needles in Southern Pines.


Phyllis is survived by lifelong friends, Barbara McIntire and Judy Bell; niece, Anne Hall (John); and nephew, Pete Hall (Gigi). Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sue Hall (Dan); nephew, Mark Hall; and niece, MaryBeth Hall.


The family would like to thank Shenika for providing such loving care.


The interment will be at a later date.
