Preparing For The Worst

Firefighters have to be prepared to respond to a wide range of emergency situations beyond the normal house fires or car wrecks that we see.

To ensure they are always prepared firefighters in Moore County use the Larry R Caddell Public Safety Training Center in Carthage to be ready to confront virtually any emergency scenario.

This week firefighters have assembled here to practice responding to an emergency with very hazardous propane gas which has caught on fire.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning firefighters from different shifts attended this training which included both classroom as well as hands on practical experience.

The scenario Wednesday morning included a propane gas fire that had extended into a nearby structure.

On-scene commanders had different groups of firefighters attacking different parts of the problem. This included a team to address the gas fire, a separate group attacked the simulated structure fire and searching for victims, and a third group ventilated the roof with a chain saw.

The large training center which opened in 2011 brings a level of realism that cannot safely be recreated elsewhere. Here officials can actually start a fire with smoke filling the building just as if it is a real fire.

Participating today were firefighters from Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Pinebluff Fire & Rescue, Pinehurst Fire Department, Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, and Fort Liberty Fire & Emergency Services.
