Scotland Firefighter Charged With Setting Fires

On Wednesday March 13, 2024 the Scotland County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division received a request from the NC Forest Service Law Enforcement Division to investigate a structure fire on Pea Bridge Road.


During the course of the investigation a volunteer firefighter from the Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Department was arrested on the scene of the fire.

While speaking with the individual it was determined more fires had been set by the suspect.


Arrested was 19 year old Hunter Chase Hatcher from Scotland County. He was charged with 3 counts of setting fire to grasslands, woods or brush, 2 counts of burning certain structures, and 1 count of burning personal property.


Hatcher was placed in the Scotland County Detention Center where he was held under a $50,000 secured bond.


All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
