Wayne Edward Key, age 82, of Carthage, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 17, 2024 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 11:00am at New Home Baptist Church in Vass with Pastor Andrew Butner and Pastor David Reynolds officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00am. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Wayne was born in Moore County on May 13, 1942 to the late Judson Maynard and Fannie Ring Key. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Corbin Rogers; sisters, Polly Ray and Brenda Hill; brothers, Richard Key and Donald Key.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Loreen Gibbons Key; daughters, Pamela Key Matthews of Vass and Karen Key Rogers (Jim) of Carthage; grandchildren, Jay Matthews of Vass, Spencer Matthews (Alyson) of West End, Kayla Mackey (Tristin) of Hubert, NC and Logan Rogers of Carthage; brothers, Robert Key of Lakeview and Steve Key of Vass.
Wayne grew up in Carthage and was one of seven children. He was a graduate of Vass-Lakeview School. He grew up knowing and loving his first and only love, Loreen Gibbons, whom he married on July 3, 1965. He retired as a Vass Sewer and Water Supervisor after more than 30 years where he met many friends. He knew no strangers.
The Key family would like to thank Davita in Carthage for the care he received there while on dialysis for over ten years. We would also like to thank the many nurses and doctors of FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital for the special and loving care he received there, especially the ones associated with his most recent care in Room 4326.
